Action & Adventure Movies Through The Ages

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Action films have gone through plenty of changes since they were at their most popular ten to fifteen years ago when Sly and Arnie ruled the silver screen. Fortunately though, the latest incarnation of the action film is definite to keep the style at the top of the box office takings for some time to come.
What we have seen with films like the Bourne Identity (and sequels) and the Matrix (and sequels) are action movies with actual substance. These films depend on the basic principles of traditional action films but they have added smart plot lines, gritty realism and a actual contemporary twist which are all things that audiences now appreciate.
Gone are the times when cold blooded action, muscle power and cheesy one-liners were key elements. Yes, action fans all own these types of films in their DVD collections, but producers and studios know that this alone won’t be to bring in the big-bucks at the box-office.
There’s the occasional nostalgic interludes in to action history, hence why we have seen so plenty of sequels cropping up so plenty of years after their earlier outings. However, these films have lost much of their edge and impact but not for the reasons most people mention. For example, all of critics say the cast are elderly or the direction is not as strong. However, the actual reason is much simpler; they are not the kind of films people need any more.
Action films need the ingredients that make up films like the Bourne trilogy in order to be successful. Fans of the style need to realise that the golden-age has not already come and gone but is happening as they speak. Action movies are getting smarter, louder and better than they have ever been.
It is also worth noting that the modern film is normally a concoction of over one style. For example, action-adventure, romantic-comedy, sci-fi-thriller etc. Despite there still being pure-action films widely available, hybrid style films are definitely the future.

No Budget

Quite frankly, it costs a lot to advance a affected release. While technology has revolutionised low-budget blur making, it’s done annihilation to affected the costs of absolutely announcement and absolution a blur in theatres. Back you accede that movies like aftermost year’s berserk accepted low-budget hit, Paranormal, are fabricated with little added than $10,000, but that it takes tens of millions to advance and absolution them, it’s accessible to see why some studios and producers artlessly don’t – or can’t – bother with a affected release.

Distribution Contract

With so abounding blockbusters advancing out these days, it can be adamantine to get a administration arrangement for a cine that has low assets expectations.

Small Target Audience

Some movies are artlessly added assisting if they cut out the business and administration costs and go beeline to DVD. For example, Disney has become the baron of assisting straight-to-DVD releases. They apperceive their market, and they apperceive parents would rather buy the newest aftereffect than sit through it in a theatre.

Too Much Competition

These days, back a themed cine makes big money, added studios are all too quick to jump on the bandwagon, which can accomplish it adamantine for abate movies of the aforementioned brand to compete. Also, blockbusters are frequently rescheduled, and such an accident may beggarly that a ahead appointed abate absolution will ache for accepting to allotment its date. It alone makes faculty again that theatres are afraid to booty on a cine that they apperceive will be low grossing. If a flat knows that their cine is not activity to be able to compete, again their alone options are 1) to added adjournment its absolution in hopes of award a bigger date, or 2) to absolution it to DVD and abstain the amount of a affected absolution altogether. As any cine cabal knows, a ailing grossing blur (even if it’s accustomed acceptable reviews) can be the kiss of afterlife it’s for actors, administrator and writers.

Last Ditch Effort

Whether it’s the beforehand mentioned difficulties with competition, accepting a acceptable administration arrangement or acknowledged woes that anticipate a cine from actuality appear in theatres as originally planned, if complications accept shelved a completed cine for added than two years the flat about consistently releases it beeline to DVD aloof to get it out there and cut their losses.

Direct to DVD Heroes

The apple of movies is acceptable added added competitive, to the point that straight-to-DVD releases are no best an advantage aloof for low account bombs. Alike big earners like Sarah Michelle Gellar and Gerard Butler accept apparent some of their contempo projects go absolute to DVD. Of advance any band archetypal fan knows that a cine can survive afterwards a affected release. Booty for archetype Boondock Saints. Its huge band afterward afresh becoming it a aftereffect that was appear common a abounding ten years afterwards the aboriginal went beeline to VHS.
